In diesem Band wird der weltweite therapeutische Gebrauch der meist als psychedelisch oder halluzinogen bezeichneten Wirkungen sakraler Heilpflanzen thematisiert. Diese Substanzen und ihre Wirkungen auf das menschliche Bewußtsein und das emotionale Erleben haben in Vergangenheit und Gegenwart zu starken sozialen Reaktionen geführt. Obgleich ihr weltweiter und über mehrere Jahrtausende belegbarer Gebrauch zu medizinischen, religiösen und spirituellen Zwecken unumstritten ist und sie in jüngster Vergangenheit einen tiefgreifenden Bewußtseins- und Wertewandel angeregt haben, führte eine prohibitive Politik dazu, die weitere Erforschung ihrer Einsatzmöglichkeiten zu therapeutischen Zwecken weitgehend zu unterbinden.
Die Beiträge dieses Bandes wie auch die Mehrzahl neuerer Publikationen wenden sich gegen Ignoranz und unsachliche Restriktionen im Umgang mit den sakralen Heilpflanzen, indem sie dem Leser eine Synthese des dazu verfügbaren Wissens bieten. Klinische, psychobiologische und ethnographische Daten geben Aufschluß über gesundheitsfördernde Wirkmechanismen und warum historisch immer wieder politische Interventionen erfolgten.

This volume is concerned with the therapeutic applications of those plants and substances generally referred to as hallucinogens and psychedelics.
These substances and their effects have provoked powerful societal reactions, historically and contemporarily. Their widespread use as medicinal, religious and spiritual recources is attested to cross-culturally. But theses substances have been viewed not only as sources of spiritual inspiration and divine healing, but also as demonically inspired influences and causes of societal decay. In recent decades a clash of values and belief systems in modern societies was provoked by these substances and the ideas they inspired. This lead to a virtual prohibition of these substances which had served as basic healing and spiritual resources for millennium.
This volume as well as an increasing number of recent publications, have attempted to redress this ignorance and repression by providing a synthesis of the available information about this important class of substances and their effects. The prior clinical knowledge of the effects of these substances, and the continuing laboratory studies of their interaction with neurotransmitter systems, has provided substantial evidence that these substances do constitute important therapeutic resources. The ethnographic and cross-cultural data provide perspectives on the appropriate modalities and contexts of use. Laboratory, clinical and ethnographic data provide insights into the reasons why they have therapeutic effects and been a source of conflicts and volatile political reactions in ancient and modern societies.
