Weithin bekannte Methoden wie die Homöopathie, die Akupunktur, die Phytotherapie, Neuraltherapie oder Chiropraktik, aber auch spirituell-esoterisch begründete Therapien bilden neben der offiziellen, durch Ärzte und Psychotherapeuten ausgeübten Heilkunde, ein in der Öffentlichkeit wohlbekanntes und vielfältig genutztes Angebot. Über die tatsächlichen präventiven, kurativen, kriseninterventionsrelevanten und die Lebensqualität verbessernden Funktionen bestehen allerdings noch kaum gesicherte Erkenntnisse.
In diesem Themenband werden konzeptionelle Ansätze zur Klassifikation der komplementären Methoden, Befragungsergebnisse über Kenntnisse und Anwendung bei Ärzten und solche über das Nutzungsverhalten bei den Patienten dargestellt. Zwei Kapitel behandeln exemplarisch Grundformen der außerakademischen und indirekten Psychotherapie sowie komlementäre Medizin im Bereich der Onkologie. Die Daten zu Verbreitung und Inanspruchnahme legen nahe, daß man künftig kaum noch von "alternativen" oder "komplementären" Formen der Heilkunde sprechen kann: Das Gesundheits- bzw. das Medizinsystem der Industrieländer ist pluralistisch geworden und es werden verschiedenste Heilsysteme parallel praktiziert und genutzt.

In addition to the officially recognized methods and practices of academic medicine and psychotherapy, other well known methods, such as homoeopathy, acupuncture, phytho-therapy, neural-therapy or chirotherapy, shape a widely used parallel health care system.
However, there is some doubt concerning the efficiacy of these non-academic methods with respect to prevention, cure, crisis-intervention and improvement of the quality of life. Even less is known about the motivations of clients who participate in Yoga and Reiki seminars, in neo-shamanic sweat-house rituals, in body therapies, or in channelling workshops. Should these phenomena even be considered as potentially important contributions to health care or should they merely relegated to the domain of leisure-time activities?
In the 22 contributions discussions revolve around concepts for the classification of alternative methods, the results of empirical studies on the practice of alternative methods by practitioners and the use by patients, examples of non-academic psychotherapy in spiritual healing groups, and complementary methods in oncology. All of these data on the hidden health care system clearly indicate that health care in the industrial countries has been converted into a network of pluralistic belief-systems and corresponding institutions, practitioners, healers and their patients.
